  6.     BLACK IN WHITE AMERICA (ABC, Aug. 29, 10 p.m. EDT); THE
  7. R.A.C.E. (NBC, Sept. 5 and 6, 10 p.m. EDT). Two networks tackle
  8. the difficult subject of race relations. The ABC report is a
  9. series of profiles put together by the network's black
  10. producers and correspondents; NBC's live two-parter, with Bryant
  11. Gumbel as host, features a survey of viewers' attitudes on race.

  13.     ALIVE FROM OFF CENTER (PBS, Aug. 30, 10 p.m. on most
  14. stations). Meredith Monk transports us to a medieval French
  15. village circa 1349 in Book of Days, the penultimate offering of
  16. this summer series of offbeat video works.

  18.     THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. BUSH TALKING WITH DAVID FROST (PBS,
  19. Sept. 5, 8 p.m. on most stations). The British interviewer, last
  20. seen on the tabloid show Inside Edition, resurfaces for an
  21. hourlong chat with the First Couple.

  25.     HARP by John Gregory Dunne (Simon & Schuster; $18.95).
  26. Novelist Dunne (True Confessions) fesses up that his own barbed
  27. style and snappish instincts have roots in an immigrant Irish
  28. heritage in which he learned that writing well is the best
  29. revenge.
  30.  
  31.     NICE WORK by David Lodge (Viking; $18.95). A funny, adroit
  32. novel about an executive in one of Britain's rust-belt factories
  33. and the feminist lecturer who does field research on his
  34. old-fashioned methods.
  35.  
  36.     AUGUST 1914 by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (Farrar, Straus &
  37. Giroux; $50 hardback, $19.95 paper). Since this novel first
  38. appeared in English 17 years ago, the 1970 Nobel laureate has
  39. added some 300 pages to his fictional but heavily researched
  40. saga of Russia's catastrophic involvement in World War I.

  44.     COOKIE. English teenager Emily Lloyd brings an acute ear and
  45. a fetching presence to her role as a Brooklyn punkster in this
  46. comedy about a Mafia don (Peter Falk) with a score to settle and
  47. a wayward daughter to raise.
  48.  
  49.     DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES. Three children in a Liverpool
  50. family literally sing their way through two decades of air
  51. raids, poverty and a father's sere brutality. Prepare to be
  52. thrilled, perplexed, horrified, haunted.
  53.  
  54.     SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE. Ann (Andie McDowell) doesn't care
  55. for sex; Graham (James Spader) can't have it. They make the
  56. perfect posterotic couple in this very funny, poignant
  57. psychodrama.

  59.     THEATER
  60.  
  61.     PRIVATES ON PARADE. War is hell, and so are high heels, as
  62. British forces in Malaysia learn while staging musicals in a
  63. campy off-Broadway delight.
  64.  
  65.     MADAME SHERRY. Connecticut's revival-oriented Goodspeed
  66. Opera House unearths another musical charmer about love, money
  67. and mistaken identity.
  68.  
  69.     INTO THE WOODS. Although Stephen Sondheim's richest, deepest
  70. Broadway show is ending its run, the work thrives in a fine
  71. national touring version.

  73.     MUSIC

  75.     MAHLER: SYMPHONIE NO. 1 (Deutsche Grammophon). The young
  76. Lenny reintroduced Mahler; maestro Bernstein now leads the
  77. Concertgebou Orchestra in a re-examination of the composer's
  78. kaleidoscopic genius.
  79.  
  80.     N.W.A.: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON (Priority). Rap that's angry,
  81. scary and tougher than the hard L.A. streets it comes from. Lots
  82. of beat, lots of truth, and no pity to spare.

  84.     EVAN JOHNS & HIS H-BOMBS: BOMBS AWAY (Rykodisc). Stand back
  85. and let these boys explode: twelve scruffy juke-joint rock
  86. tunes as hot as the peppers at the far end of the bar.

  88.     PETER CASE: THE MAN WITH THE BLUE POSTMODERN FRAGMENTED
  89. NEO-TRADITIONALIST GUITAR (Geffen). Yeah, and that's not all
  90. he's got. An ear for the blues, a gift for the phrase, a way to
  91. make a song sound like a silent prayer.

  94.  
  95.     FIFTEEN YEARS OF COLLECTING, Whitney Museum of American Art,
  96. New York City. The Whitney claims the world's most comprehensive
  97. gathering of 20th century American art; this potpourri of works
  98. acquired since 1972 amply reflects its riches. Through Oct. 15.
  99.  
  100.     ROBERT MOSKOWITZ, Hirshhorn Museum, Washington. Long in the
  101. shadow of contemporaries like Jasper Johns, this 54-year-old
  102. American, whose canvases feature the interplay of recognizable
  103. images and abstraction, gets his first museum retrospective.
  104. Through Sept. 17.

  106.     PERPETUAL MOTIF: THE ART OF MAN RAY, the Menil Collection,
  107. Houston. More than 200 of the haunting, mysterious paintings,
  108. works on paper, photographs and objects created by the
  109. pioneering Dadaist and surrealist (1890-1976). Through Sept. 17.
